Owner Mark Owen was looking to make a career shift when he noticed his friends going gaga over textiles and artwork he'd brought back from Southeast Asia. So, after conducting small sales at City Bakery and Village Zendo (then a trial run on Mulberry Street), he set up shop at this small storefront on Avenue C. Though on a strip that's hardly a retail mecca, Owen's business has attracted repeat customers with its finely woven wall hangings and delicate silk scarves—both handmade and using natural dyes—as well as an in-house line of dishes made south of Hanoi and colonial Burmese furniture ideal for small apartments. Whatever the country of origin for the goods, Owen guarantees all represented artisans are working in a safe, humane environment. — Corinne Iozzio
