Profile
Thirty years after its 1973 opening, founder Allan Mehlberg sold his urban general store to long-time employees Karen Hue and Victoria Cook. Coffee and tea (the latter comes loose leaf or boxed) remain the main draws yet the current owners have gone on to carefully stock nearly every inch of their tiny, tall-ceilinged shop with a treasure trove of household goods. Now bathmats, coasters, and tea kettles fill the wooden shelves alongside gourmet foods such as American Spoon Preserves and Italian chocolates. White House Coffee from Queens is the primary bean supplier (as it has been since the store opened) but each day one of the nearly 100 other blends—from Canada's Kicking Horse to End the Embargo on Cuba—is featured as the daily special. — Pervaiz Shallwani

Love this shop...I've lived in Brooklyn for over 7 years and even though I moved to Bay Ridge over 5 years ago, I make weekend forays back to Park Slope. The staff is friendly, warm, helpful...the shop feels cozy, the smell of coffee in the air, seasonal displays in the windows and usually a mascot kitty to greet you when you walk in the door. You can buy Fair Trade coffee beans or have them ground to your desire. There is a wonderful assortment of teas for tea lovers in containers as well as loose leaf, kitchen gadgets for foodies, decadent chocolates, and I've bought many gifts from their eclectic mix of servers, salt & pepper shakers, mugs, frames, baskets, linens, & much more. Make Leaf & Bean part of weekly ritual and you'll be hooked like me. It makes me smile everytime I walk in the shop!
