Profile
This vivid French fabric shop stitches custom home furnishings, as well as a cheery array of ready-made pillows, table linens, and tote bags. Les Toiles du Soleil translates to “canvas of the sun”; the durable fabric was originally used to make colorful espadrilles. Dozens of bolts of the brand’s signature striped fabric line the exposed-brick walls in tropical shades. Pencil cases, cloth napkins, place mats, and notebook covers are fanned out in neat piles on the counter; laptop and tote bags of all sizes hang from coat racks; and rainbow-banded pillows are propped up on bookshelves. The fabric costs $58 per yard ($78 for water-resistant, patio-ready styles), and an in-store seamstress creates custom window treatments, duvet covers, oversize pillows, and tablecloths from a sewing machine in back. The shop is a popular destination for affordable table adornments and home accents, though many unfamiliar shoppers are lured from the sidewalk by the riot of color within.
