Started in the late 1960s as a nonprofit venture that sold crafts made by cooperatives across the U.S., this clothing store stays true to its social and environmental roots: Racks of organic, natural-fiber clothing match up with the political leanings of the store’s loyal customers. But while the mission these days is more politically correct than radical or revolutionary, the merchandise (predominantly geared towards women and children) reflects a broader sensibility: You can think globally and shop locally with accessories from New York-based designers like scarf painter Suzanne Punch, or think globally and shop globally with nationally-recognized and European brands like O.Y.B, Flax, Sarah Pacini, and Drifter, as well as fabrics, jewelry, and handcrafted boxes from small coops in Nepal and South America.
