Lucia Nenickova was born and raised in the Czech Republic before coming to New York to apprentice under old-school leather-goods master Barbara Shaum. Now the owner of her own shoebox-size shop, Nenickova specializes in entirely handmade leather goods, like beautifully tanned goat- and calf-leather bags lined in vibrantly hued pig suede. All of the bags—from totes to briefcases to clutches—have a chic, utilitarian feel. The brass and stainless steel hardware is bridle-inspired, and the fancier models employ ostrich-leg closures and straps. Simple leather sandals, like chocolate-colored gladiators, gold T-straps, and salt-and-pepper ostrich slides have gained a following due to their comfortably molded arches. And the fine leathers, which Nenickova acquires from the best tanneries in the U.S. and England, also take the shape of belts, wallets, bracelets, coasters, frames, and iPod holders.
