Founded in 1998 by Chip Wilson, this nationwide sportswear chain started as a yoga apparel shop-cum-studio. Though the chain now carries a variety of athletic apparel and accessories for men and women, yoga is still the focus; on Sunday nights after closing, customers of all levels can participate in a free in-store yoga session led by local instructors. At the SoHo store, eco-friendly bright blue paint and inspirational quotes cover the walls and the floors are made from recycled beams. Fresh orchids and bamboo are scattered among headband displays, balance balls, and a recycling station. Serious yoga enthusiasts can find ten types of spandex pants and sports bras, with written descriptions pertaining to each. Sweat-proof tops come in flattering shapes and colors, and there are socks, tees, shorts, and jackets designed to wick moisture as well.
