Can you keep a secret? M + J Savitt wants its status rep to stay on the QT. Dealing mainly in special-orders and on commission, the jewelry designer's Fifth Avenue location is a place where VIPs swoon over the company's handmade pieces—famously made with untreated stones—during oh-so-private appointments. The office looks utterly corporate blah—until clients are seated on the tufted carpet with one of the barefoot, designer-draped sales associates to admire the spread of jewels and gold bangles, often en route to or from a photo shoot. M + J is a favorite of designers like Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors, who have commissioned boho-luxe designs and fist-size, prong-set black onyx gold crosses to more timeless diamond pieces. Those who visit the 20th floor salon may drool a bit as they browse "the dining room"—a precious candy store of onyx, sapphire and blue topaz set upon a large table, with the occasional gold-link chain dangling from a floor-propped antique mirror. For civilians who don't merit a private visit, M + J's prong-set pink rose quartz earrings, tiger's-eye necklaces and rock star-meets-UES precious metal cuffs can also be found at Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Tory Burch.
