A J.Crew Group spin-off, Madewell offers high-quality wardrobe staples that are more girly (and crunchy) than those of its parent brand. Inspired by a Massachusetts workwear label of the same name established in 1937, Madewell is known for its sturdy denim in three staple cuts—Rail Straight, Skinny Low, and Bootlegger—each around $100. Easy-to-wear tunic dresses, lightweight cardigans, T-shirts, sweaters, and scarves round out the Madewell look in a kaleidoscope of colors and festive prints. The two-story store is set up like a boho coed’s dream house: White brick brightens the entire shop, while a floor-to-ceiling shelf of records (not for sale) and art books (for sale), along with a small greenhouse flanked by bright-yellow vintage bikes, decorate the top floor. The infinitely wearable pieces are subdivided into mini-collections with different themes, but can be easily combined for a variety of classic weekender looks.
