It’s all about the fit for Malia Mills, who opened the first Brooklyn outpost of her eponymous high-end swimwear line in March 2011. The shop is an addition to the increasingly affluent stretch of boutiques like Steven Alan and Mafalda lining the Boerum Hill sections of Atlantic Avenue. Together with her sister Carol, Malia clarifies the vague world of swimsuit sizing by tailoring tops to bra size and bottoms to pant size. A dark denim "Bra Va Va Voom" retro underwire top is made especially for D-cup gals; a fun "Summer of Love" sixties-inspired bottom with dark wooden rings is $135, as is an emerald-green "It's a Cinch" bottom with ruched sides that flatters gals with nice, round hips. One-pieces, tankinis, maternity, and bridal suits hang--neatly spaced to avoid tangling--on racks in the sunny shop, all white to enhance the brightly colored swimwear. Curtained cabanas that serve as dressing rooms leave plenty of room for two people (plus elbows) to accommodate an advice-giving friend or one of the store’s fit specialists.Bridal
Anyone can look glamorous in these swimsuits, but brides come for the subtle-yet-sophisticated bridal and bridesmaids' underwear; post-wedding-night offerings include a bridal bikini with Swarovski crystals that spell out JUST MARRIED.
