A bike mechanic since his salad days in the Dominican Republic, Eduardo “Kimbo” Fernandez took the helm of this shop in 1998 when he bought it from its namesake. And though that name isn’t his, the rest of the store is, as he runs the one-man operation like his own garage, tinkering with the latest drop-off in the back while brushing off neighborhood kids, fleets of whom occasionally skid up to haggle over a brake-tightening or ogle the skull-and-crossbones valve caps. As to the diversified phalanx of bikes that hang overhead, there’s everything from Mongoose BMXs for youngsters to racing and mountain bikes for commuters. The $40, next-day cleaning and tune-up is a perfect prep for a ride across nearby George Washington Bridge—a popular route that connects local riders with scenic Jersey bike paths; those curious about other nearby destinations can glean some hard-won pointers from Fernandez, who dons Lycra himself to participate in amateur races. When heading out the door for a test-spin, keep an eye out for photos of a sister store, which Fernandez has since launched in his native Santiago.
