With a Japanese aesthetic, a French name (meaning “vegetable seller”) and a prime Nolita location, Marchand de Legumes showcases the best—and weirdest—of many worlds. Its playful mix of stationery, iPod cases, psychedelic wall clocks, talking watches, and Pan Am carry-on bags make shopping for that kicky co-worker or goofy sibling a snap. Kitschy home accessories, such as their welcome mats shaped like manhole covers and melamine dinner plates by French Bull and Thomas Paul are more humorous alternatives to staid host(ess) gifts. The real draw, however, is the funky children’s clothing. In addition to carrying printed tees from Finnish textile powerhouse Marimekko, Marchand de Legumes is the only spot in the city where you can purchase silk-screened onesies by Kit + Lili. Why all the wacky items from designers around the globe? Marchand de Legumes is actually the Stateside outpost of an enormously successful Tokyo gift emporium.
