Occupying a single-room, low-ceilinged space and displaying just a few suits in the window, Mario Caldi is a low-key presence among the multiple-story retail hotshots crowding Madison Avenue. The menswear is arranged in deep, double-stacked wood-enclosed racks—just as fine cigars might be displayed in a polished hardwood box. The suits, shirts, and ties are all from the house label. Suits come mostly in fine wool--some in cashmere—and principally adhere to tried-and-true looks, like pinstripes, navies, blacks, and grays. There are cuff links and belts to complement the outfits and an eager staff available to help with selections. Prices can easily reach four digits, and the high-quality Italian design and materials keep Mario Caldi competitive with its better-known neighbors.
