Profile
Less expansive than Toys ’R’ Us and less quaint than Gepetto’s Workshop, Mary Arnold Toys nevertheless holds its own with UES kids (and has done so since it opened in 1931). The small space has curried favor with neighborhood youngsters by keeping its alcoves well-stocked with games, books, and costumes of both the generic and quirky kind. Legos or Monopoly nod to chain-store realities but more interesting are finds like the Spy Zoom Cam or a pink tulle gown with silver stars. Also on hand are utilitarian goodies like the stimulating Galt Playnest for newborns and the School Zone educational materials. As an added bonus, the shop offers free delivery between 59th and 86th Streets on the East Side, plus personal shopping and gift-wrapping services. — Aaron Rasmussen

My go to children's gift store when I want to be unique
This is a boutique children's toy store that cares about the products they sell. If you are looking for the cheapest alternative, this is NOT the place for you. If you are looking for helpful staff who understand their audience (both the gift giver and the child receiving), MAT offers all of the classics but mostly has products which allow children to use their imagination and learn while playing (e.g, children's cookbooks, puzzles which teach about the animal kingdom, dress-up costumes). Plus their gift wrapping (at no charge) and their flexible delivery service are a huge help for busy families.
I bought a TMX Elmo doll (tickle me elmo) from them recently for $65. I didn't realize that everywhere else sold it brand new for as low as $29.99 (and never higher than $49.99). When I called to inquire about the incredible premium tacked on to their price, I was told that the store "had to" buy it at an inflated price due to high demand. Yeah right. Type in TMX Elmo online and there are a zillion places that sell it spanking new for a fraction of the price. I also notice that other toys that I bought from them are also priced way way above list price. This store is a total rip off. Don't shop here unless you just don't care about fair or ethical pricing.
