Massimo Dutti launched in 1985 as a menswear brand; womenswear was added ten years later. Its first U.S. flagship is a palatial space on Fifth Avenue filled with several stories of ready-to-wear with a classic Italian sensibility. The store holds clothing for all occasions plus a slough of accessories: leather bags and shoes, jewelry, sunglasses—even dress watches. The third floor is solely devoted to menswear and runs the gamut from casual shirts, colorful jeans, and a myriad of cashmere sweaters to suits. Employees who serve as personal stylists can help shoppers determine what looks best on them, and there are complimentary alterations. Women can browse through an extensive selection of silk blouses and cashmere twinsets in the midst of a wide array of dresses, leather jackets, and an entire underground level devoted just to shoes.
