After six years of running his successful women’s shoe label, Tribeca-based designer Matt Bernson opened his first flagship store in the spring of 2012. Located a little off-the-beaten path, the shop is a place for customers to kick their feet up and sip some wine or espresso, then leave with a new pair of shoes, an accessory from Dannijo, or a pair of vintage Persol or YSL shades. The company’s motto is “Sex + Comfort,” an idea that Bernson came up with after tuning into his female customers’ complaints about the pressure of sacrificing comfort for style. As a result, Bernson inserts a discreet layer of memory foam into the soles of his sandals and puts a velvety layer of moleskin on that abrasive, blister-building heel of his ballet flats. Though Gisele Bündchen and Jessica Alba are among his clientele, Bernson’s shop, which doubles as a showroom, has a laid back quality and prices that won’t bust your wallet. The space is sleek, with hardwood floors and whitewashed walls, and is decorated with unique global finds, such as petrified wood stumps from Java. Bernson himself is often there to chat, and if you’re lucky you’ll be greeted by his dog Abraham— a spunky, copper-toned Vizsla who “only barks at every hundredth customer.”
