Mass-market fashion basics with fashionable twists form the core of Max Studio's collections, new versions of which are churned out every fifteen days (no typo) in the every-day-to-evening-wear empire of Leon Max, the California-based designer/proprietor, who has been manufacturing flirty, funky, feminine fashions since 1979. Though the sunny, granite-floored Soho store has more than 50 clones around the world, many in malls, the busy women who shop here come more for the wardrobe essentials—fitted white shirts, workhorse black bootlegs, draped cocktail dresses that span the seasons—than any kind of exclusivity. The generously-cut, constantly evolving designs include Empire waists, simple A-line skirts, bias cut frocks and work-friendly trousers. Beading, embroidery, playful hemlines, and bold prints brighten many basics, with shoes, scarves and purses manufactured to match. Max's Studio M line of classic denims and novelty T's skews slightly street; there's also a line of cotton yoga separates. The store's selection matches its background music—soft, accessible, feminine pop that comforts and flatters without much challenge.
