Profile
McGuire furnishings are characterized by big proportions and a distinct “Indo-chic” style. John and Elinor McGuire founded their company in San Francisco as a line of high-quality rattan and hardwood outdoor furniture with a Pacific Rim vibe. Today, under the Kohler Interiors furniture conglomerate, their rattan pieces come in dozens of colors and finishes, from oxblood to gold leaf, and in decidedly modern interpretations. The Butterfly Chair, for instance, is a winning combination of island charm and swooping Gehry-esque form. A fresh line of teak outdoor furniture from designer Thomas Pheasant would fit in any urban garden or rooftop lounge. Heavy walnut dining tables, extra-wide armchairs, and enormous wall mirrors with chunky frames are paired with monochromatic sculptural pieces—a cluster of persimmon “Peking glass” vases or a two-foot-tall ceramic rabbit—that lighten up the otherwise weighty scale of design.
