Profile

In 1972 Nancy Cogen began a small batik business from her home after taking a class in the centuries-old art. More than 30 years later, that enterprise has expanded into Carroll Gardens' Melting Pot, which Cogen runs with her daughter, Tammy Johnson. Batiking is a process where fabric is partially coated with wax in shapes like hearts, stars, or the Brooklyn Bridge, and then dunked in dye, imbuing the fabric with colorful hues around the design. Almost anything—from tote bags to baby bibs—can be fodder for batiking, but it's clothing in sizes from infant to adult that takes up the most shelf space in this mid-size shop. There are daisy-printed, bubble-gum-colored tees, peace-sign adorned onesies, and long-sleeve shirts with puffy clouds and declarations of Brooklyn love.
