In 1998, William Lee opened Modernlink as a mini furniture department within ABC Carpet & Home; six years later, it moved into its own store on Bond Street. Named after an exhibit about Eastern influences on Western furniture that Lee saw in Oslo, Modernlink reflects his superb eye for design. About 80 percent Danish vintage finds like horsehair Papa Bear chairs and minimalist coffee tables restored to their original condition, the stock also contains sleek bamboo designs from Onelink. Headed by industrial designer Piet Houtenbos, Onelink is made up of an eclectic group of designers—Lee among them. Despite the store's spacious, white-walled, gallerylike environment—originally created by architect Richard Gluckman for a Katayone Adeli boutique—Modernlink has a familial, friendly vibe. Lee loves to share the history of all his pieces, which he brings back from his trips to Denmark about five times a year.
