Although MoMo FaLana has developed a following among fashion insiders like Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, and Naomi Campbell, the store has an unpretentious, fairy-tale vibe that hardly takes itself seriously. Co-owner Maureen Roberts named the shop—a vine-covered jewel box in lavender, pink, and yellow—after a nickname a friend gave her. “It’s my alter-ego who just wants to lounge around in multi-colored silk and be waited on,” she explains, and goes on to describe her richly-colored silk, velvet, satin, and rayon dresses as “fairy- and mermaid-inspired.” Each piece is handmade and hand-dyed, conceptualized by Maureen and engineered by her business partner husband Michael Lublin; prices range from $95 for a sexy vintage slip to $750 for a full-length silk dress. In 2005 the couple started custom-designing non-traditional wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses, in colors from luscious cream to deep blues, reds, and purples. A cowl-neck number with crossed spaghetti straps (worn by Joss Stone to the 2005 Grammy Awards) is now one of their most popular bridal choices. Frocks are available in sizes 0–18, and the forgiving bias-cut designs and deep necklines make the dresses especially flattering to curvy women. — Valerie Denny
