A trip to eco-friendly Portland, Oregon motivated Carrie McLaren to open this children’s consignment shop, an inherently environmentally-conscious venture, in the parlor level of her family’s brownstone. A published author and editor with a focus on consumer culture, she describes the shop as a “neighborhood marketplace for used clothing” where items can be bought outright or on consignment. Over 400 regular consignors frequently bring in nearly new wares (commonly available labels include Jacadi, L.L. Bean, Gap and babyGap, Lucky Wang, Crewcuts and Mini Boden), as well as car seats, strollers, booster seats and other gear. And sellers needn’t allow inflexible schedules to keep them from offloading their gear—drops offs can be made anytime during regular hours, and by appointment on Tuesday, when the shop is normally closed, or after hours; McLaren will also make pick ups. To allay bed bug-related concerns, sellers’ addresses are checked in the bedbug registry and all items are heat-treated with PackTite prior to going on the floor.
