Motif 56 simultaneously conforms to and defies stereotypes. The intimate clothing, accessories, and home furnishings boutique stocks the ceramics, pillows, tooled leather belts, sandals and ethnic apparel you'd expect from any Moroccan-inspired import store, but Israeli owner Galila Riss's careful, exacting eye helps move her offerings beyond the easy, ethnic clichés. She and her husband help design of many of the pillows, clothes and pottery. Their goal is nothing less than a "redesign" of Morocco—a kind of re-imagining, based on a cleaner, more contemporary look. To that end, they don't limit themselves to tradition, nor even to Morocco—merchandise comes from South America, India, Madagascar, and even the States. Ceramic tagines and leather poufs are on offer in a range of colors, from cobalt to fuchsia; some sandals, bags and T-shirts are as beaded and sequined as any catwalk garb. The store's jewelry offerings include silver and gold chains and dangly earrings and chunky strands of large colorful beads; multi-strand necklaces of smaller beads mix in with occasional dainty pieces that are both unique and stylish. The tunics, full skirts, and gauzy, diaphanous fabrics at Motif 56 also push the ethnic envelope, to an urban, contemporary, fashion-forward place.
