The London designer Nicholas Kirkwood makes shoes that are more art pieces than mere footwear, and so it makes sense that the Mehrnoosh Khadivi-designed store, the brand’s first American flagship, is as minimal and sleek as the neighboring Chelsea galleries. The shoes range from flashy, Keith Haring-inspired heels and sky-high collaborations with brands like Erdem and Peter Pilotto to simple sling-back pumps. All are handcrafted in Italy and accoutered in such luxurious materials as devoré satin, shaved stingray, and hand-printed leather. In keeping with the art world aesthetic, prices can be upwards of four figures, but shoe fetishists leave with a collector’s item in hand. The service is unobtrusive but informed, and champagne is sometimes offered to shoppers as they browse, adding to the art opening vibe.
