Without fail, the hottest clubs are the hardest to get into, the fanciest restaurants are those with unlisted numbers and, as in Nom De Guerre’s case, the coolest clothing stores operate well below the radar. Down a dubious set of stairs, behind a blank metal door, this subterranean men’s clothing store lets its high-concept streetwear do the talking. The multi-level bunker, a former meeting place of the Black Panthers, carries military-inspired men’s sportswear, which includes pea coats and sweaters in the winter, and windbreakers, nautically-striped knits, and printed T-shirts in the spring. In addition to its own collection, Nom De Guerre also carries select accessories like Oliver Peoples sunglasses and Trickers London utilitarian boots. In 2007, the store, named for the spirit of war, expanded its empire even further downstairs with ready-to-wear from labels like Commes de Garçons, Noah, and A.P.C. — Alexis Brunswick
