From a commuter’s Fox mountain bike to a road warrior’s Scott racer, NYC Velo’s inventory of city-worthy bikes is designed to confer a measure of respectability to any cyclist. The laid-back staff can help recommend bikes based on planned usage and can guide customers through the range of extra gear—such as the pocket-size CO2 containers for on-the-go tire refills, or Gore-Tex windbreakers for less-than-favorable conditions. At the back of the narrow rack-and-shelf space is a repair shop and “lounge” where riders can gnaw a free bagel, sip some free-trade coffee, and share riding tips while they wait. Velo also sponsors a range of bike-advocacy programs: local transportation-reform nonprofits, national fund-raising rides, and free monthly repair classes to encourage customers to make cycling part of their routine. To set an example, all the staffers bike to work every day—a fact that also makes them a great source for route and maintenance advice.
