Williamsburg’s artistic multi-tasking is perhaps nowhere in greater evidence than at the neighborhood’s nydesignroom, a slightly out-of-the-way DIY-looking shop and studio decorated in corrugated steel and lacquered plywood. An ambitious undertaking, the project was originally conceived as a design cooperative that would offer an interdisciplinary mélange of creative services, from architectural design to product development. The mission has been tailored a bit, and the design team now concentrates almost exclusively on the creation of customized clothing—although they still take on a bit of non-fashion design work, too. The signature Trash-a-Porter collection consists of clothing made of pieced together vintage T-shirts or cashmere sweaters, and there’s a line of apparel made from un-recycled materials, too, that includes industrial-felt coats. All the pieces emphasize materiality and careful construction, and while off-the-rack samples exist, most customers select a style and then have a unique garment custom made. Kid-sized versions of the jersey and cashmere Trash-A-Porter creations are also for sale.
