If you’re the kind of person to whom the film Sideways served as a manifesto, then you’ll appreciate Omega Wines and Spirits. At Omega, wine rules: The staff can speak intelligently of every bottle on the shelves, and regularly scheduled wine tastings look to elevate your erudition to a similar level. As befits the neighborhood, the selection is heavy on Greek varieties, with special attention to woodsy retsina, the unofficial house wine of Greece. And though wine is king here, a quick scan of the space reveals an impressive inventory of spirits that have nothing to do with the grape: rarities (Pimm’s), special editions (Kahlua Black), twenty-two species of tequila from eye-squint to ay-caramba, and–still true to Astoria–eighteen kinds of ouzo, one of which is guaranteed to gladden your host the next time you’re invited to one of the area’s infamous Saturday-night house parties.
