Creating clothes came naturally to Khadda Madani, who grew up in southern France; in her native Algerian culture, she explains, it was common for women to have dresses custom made. Today, the designer considers herself a sculptor when it comes to fabrics. “Each material has its own identity and personality, and I like to make them coexist,” she says. This melting-pot philosophy is apparent in Madani’s diaphanous dresses, composed mainly of swatches of bold-colored fabric. As is clear from the name of her shop, the proprietress thinks of the Open Door Gallery not only as a store but as a place of artistic display: Her own garments sit next to handbags and jewelry by international designers, and her artwork (she’s also a landscape painter) dresses the walls. Madani runs the store by herself (“Please forgive me if I run late sometimes!” is written below the shop’s hours), and her ebullient personality dominates the space. When asked about her influences, she replies, “Life, darling,” and claims one of her main goals to be to design pieces that can be worn by people from ages 17 to 77.
