California-bred Ashley Thompson’s Zenlike boutique is a stark contrast to the ubiquitous fashion chain stores in Union Square. Owl’s Lab caters to the postcollege working girl just as much as it does to the NYU and New School students who live in the area. Handbags by Rebecca Minkoff, for instance, can function as either a book bag or a trendy weekend tote. There’s a fresh mix of folded cotton tees by Sharon Segal and C&C California, stacks of jeans by Earnest Sewn and Citizens of Humanity, and work-appropriate silk blouses and sweaters by Paul & Joe—and many of the items go for under $100. — Alexis Brunswick
