This modestly sized scuba store churns out new divers with its free “Try SCUBA” class, one of the several courses offered through their instructional diving program. Inveterate scuba enthusiasts, meanwhile, will go head over heels for high-tech options like dive computers with integrated face masks, breathing hoses, and transmitters. Pan Aqua also caters to young divers with pint-size thermal suits and sea-themed stuffed animals. There’s an impressive array of size-specific goggles and masks that can be outfitted in-store with prescription lenses or sent out for more specialized features like bifocals. It’s probably a good idea to stock up on the sunblock and lens defogger before heading to Cozumel or Grand Cayman on one of Pan Aqua’s regular dive trips—though there’s actually no need to leave the metro area to get in some good underwater time: New York is one of the best areas for wreck diving, as store-sponsored expeditions in the Atlantic demonstrate firsthand.
