Pearl Paint is the kind of art supply house that could inspire you to quit your work-a-day life and begin anew as a trust-fund dilettante. As a retail resource, it inspires superlatives: The Mecca of Mixed Media; the Holy Grail of Hand-Made Papers; Tons of Tempera, Tape and Thumbtacks. The main branch on Canal Street houses six floors of everything your creative whims could ever cause you to crave; upon arrival, grab the handy store directory, which lists what’s on each floor as well as what’s in Pearl’s adjacent home decorating, framing and craft shops. For the most part, products are conveniently arranged by medium, with painting and drawing supplies on two, papers on three and sculpture and airbrush supplies on four. The smaller Gramercy location, located near the School of Visual Arts, offers a more basic, yet still topnotch, student-focused selection of materials.
