Pennsylvania Station
|
If you’re picturing winos swilling rotgut, think again. This Penn Station wine shop evokes a Napa Valley tasting room with its terra-cotta and redwood interior, complete with a pouring station in the back. The selection is equally cultivated, with an especially vigorous representation of South American producers alongside American bottles largely from California but also from Long Island vineyards, just a train ride away. If you’re no oenophile, don’t worry: A basic selection of gin, vodka, whiskey, Scotch, and liqueurs is also available. One note to harried businessmen ducking in for a quick gift before boarding the 5:12: This staff hand-sells each bottle, after discussion, consideration, and maybe a tasting. Rush hour doesn’t translate as rushed purchases, so you’re going to need to shift out of the hard-driving commuter rhythm when you’re shopping here. But hey, what is a bottle of wine about, if not slowing down and relaxing?
