Profile
Fit snuggly inside the lobby of the ICP is this darkroom-size gift shop. Half of the high-ceilinged space overflows with books on notable photographers and the craft of photography. For more discerning eyes (and deeper pockets), a slim shelf in the corner displays rare, limited-edition, and out-of-print tomes like Terry Richardson’s risqué Kabash and a signed copy of Bruce Davidson’s landmark Subway. A modest selection of biographical DVDs on greats like Man Ray, Chuck Close, and Nan Goldin rounds out the media collection. The rest of the inventory ranges from playful gifts like photo-realistic place mats and pinhole-camera kits to serious staples like photo albums and picture frames. The best time to visit is during a Friday-evening book signing, when a D.J. and complimentary wine make browsing extra lively.

The Alterna-Sohos
While the rest of the city scurries up and down Broadway, these three micro–shopping districts remain blissfully unpicked-over.
