Visiting Pippin Vintage Jewelry is like peeking inside a glamorous grandmother’s jewelry box. A treasure trove for fashionistas and bargain hunters alike, the store is chock-full of items like spiky floral brooches, Mexican sterling-silver pins, rhinestone bracelets, and Haskell pearl necklaces. Husband-and-wife owners Rachel and Stephen Cooper cull from auctions and estate sales throughout Massachusetts and Vermont; the duo spent ten years hawking vintage jewelry at the 26th Street flea market before they opened a shop on Orchard Street, then moved uptown to their current location on “thrift row” in Chelsea. Named after the couple’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Pippin is an exposed-brick space brightened by an upholstered chair, ethnic rugs, and a 16-foot Indian crewel tapestry. Wooden armoires hold trinkets and collectibles from the 1900s through the eighties—everything from funky, pink shell necklaces to glittery Trifari pins to Bakelite bracelets. The focus is on value, with thousands of pieces going for two figures and “five-dollar drawers” full of brooches, rings, earrings, and cufflinks. A window in back looks out on a hidden courtyard with a charming, shingled “house” where the Coopers sell vintage furniture and home goods at sister shop Pippin Home.
