The smell of pastries and the comforting aroma of chocolate and fresh cakes wafting from the Polka Dot Cake Studio entrances drift half a block in either direction. This custom-cake bakery and espresso bar was started in 2002 by Turkish pastry chef Ayse Dizioglu, who had worked in catering management on Wall Street when she decided to partner with two recent cooking school grads to follow her dream of opening her own bakery. The result is a panoply of sugary pleasures well worth breaking a diet for. Hand-made fruit tarts, muffins, and cookies line the glass-encased front counter, vying for attention beside the as-advertised "Better Than Brat Pitt" brownies. A variety of custom-made cakes are displayed as well, and can be made to order. While the back half of the store is taken up by the open kitchen, there are several tables and a sumptuous velvet divan in the front for those who would like to linger over a cappuccino.
ExtraCustom-made cakes are available, ranging from $29 for a 6" cake that feeds up to 10 people, to bigger wedding and specialty cakes for any number of guests.
