Riffing off the longstanding success of his nearby Ugly Luggage shop—beloved for its vintage furniture and knickknacks—owner Jim Lanning opened this second store, which is more upscale in both name and selection. An Old English word meaning “traveling valise,” Portmanteau is filled with treasures for the home ranging from eighteenth-century antique to Danish modern. Unlike the jam-packed Ugly Luggage, this modest one-room space is clutter-free and thoughtfully edited: Everything is crafted by hand from both up-and-coming and established artists. Beautifully arranged vanities, dressers, and chairs mingle with lamps, mirrors, and glassware, as well as novelties like old anatomy books, mounted antlers, and typewriter tins, all clearly labeled with humorous price tags penned by the accessible, attentive staff. — Bree Sposato
