According to the staff at Autumn Skateboard Shop, the store gets its name from a Neutral Milk Hotel song. And even if they’re a little fuzzy on exactly which song (or album, or lyric), they're not nearly as soft on details when it comes to skateboarding. The twentysomethings working here know their stuff, from the trucks and bearings that would best suit a beginner to the relative merits of wheel size to where to practice kick flips and ollies (nearby Tompkins Square Park is a great warm-up spot). The small store has the feel of a roofed alleyway, with exposed brick and a narrow floor space, decorated with a hodgepodge of drawings and photographs. Colorful decks by Five Burroughs, Shut, and Traffic hang on the walls; below that, shelves of sneakers from Lakai, Converse, Emerica, and Vans, along with printed tees designed by local skaters and artists. Autumn may not have the largest inventory in the city, but they are big on creativity and carry unusual pieces that you won’t see everywhere else.
