Profile

When a rug-store-cum-mechanic’s-garage came on the market near Rachel Comey’s apartment building in Soho, the space made sense for its sheer convenience. But since opening in June, this New York flagship has revealed itself to be a perfect reflection of Comey’s masculine-with-feminine-details style: Most of her collections, spotted on the likes of Maggie Gyllenhaal and author Miranda July, revolve around loose, free-form clothing, like the army-green, Westside pants ($368)—pleated and high-waisted. At the shop’s entrance, the original steel garage door slides open to reveal cushy red sofas and a rectangular, concrete display block at the center, topped with ankle boots ($403) and low-heeled slingback clogs ($472). In the dressing room, a beige shag rug on one wall, balanced out by wood-form concrete on the others, reflects Comey’s tendency to mix materials in her clothing: Take, for example, a boxy boatneck top, in pick-stitch cotton with indigo denim sleeves ($334), and the Innsbruck-stitched Gideon pants with leather pockets. Feminine accents include ’70s-inspired bows on rayon blouses, and ostrich feathers hand-sewn on the front of sleeveless, cotton poplin tops. Comey also stocks her own jewelry, sunglasses, and even floral-print umbrellas.
