This North Carolina company, founded in 2008, makes denim from local materials (including the sacrosanct cone denim) using traditional methods. And yes, there is a sewing machine in the shop (they offer complimentary hemming). But this Nolita store—wherein lives their designer denim and their growing collection of shirts, dresses, and outerwear for both men and women—eschews the faux-rugged aesthetic for something more conceptual. From the men’s collection in the “foyer,” you can see the sewing machine in the “parlor.” The store also sells handknit Batcave Beanies, named for their North Carolina town of origin, and a few varieties of chocolate bars from Raleigh-based Escazu. Such attentiveness and selectivity draws brand devotees from all over the country to this downtown store, where an urban edge dices and reconfigures southern comfort.
