The voice of Darrin Siegfried, the store’s co-owner and oeno-guru, virtually echoes through the rooms here. Siegfried was the education director for the Sommelier Society of America, and he’s still eager to teach and encourage. Unpretentious, exclamation-marked notes flap from the shelves; he might highlight a rare Vouvray or cheer “forget about those wine snobs, drink a delicious Merlot!” The shop’s biscuit-yellow walls, ruddy wood racks, and occasional boxes of wine stacked on the floor give the space a casual warmth. The thousand-strong wines are organized by both origin and varietal. Though you’ll spot better-known names, like Grgich Hills Chardonnay, you won’t see any mass-produced vintages. And there’s a deep selection of bottles from emerging regions, like Hungary and Ischia. Keep an eye out for Feliz Red, Feliz White, and Grand Army Meritage, three California blends made exclusively for the store.
