Founded in 1978, this politically minded bookstore is run as a not-for-profit foundation and staffed completely by volunteers. Rows of wooden shelves are stacked with new books and periodicals devoted to Mao, Marx, and Lenin and other radical thinkers, and a small table near the register is given over to used titles. One section highlights the views of Bob Avakian, chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, while another covers issues like world hunger and the environment. The store doubles as a forum for political conversation: Locals gather to discuss revolution and communism every Tuesday night, and author readings, panels, debates, film screenings, and performances regularly take place on the small stage at one end of the store.
