Originally founded in Osaka, Japan, in the late eighties, high-end lingerie brand Ripplu was created expressly for the petite frames of Asian women—a niche market that had barely been touched at the time. Specializing in custom-fitted bras and matching panties, the brand has since grown to offer intimates for full-figured sizes as well as maternity and nursing bras. Its New York store, however, remains a destination for small-busted women in search of the perfect fit. After a client is measured during a scheduled consultation, a Ripplu specialist custom-alters either a bra from the store’s functional yet lacey namesake line (whose sizes range from 30A to 40H), or a piece from names like La Perla, Chantelle, or Prima Donna. The staff swear that after continual use of their bras (which employ a “three-step system” that involves pulling fatty tissue from a woman’s sides, pushing it up and holding it in place, and forming it into an attractive rack of cleavage), sagging or compressed breast tissue (from wearing poorly fitted undergarments) will gradually take on its original, youthful shape. Plastic surgeons: consider this a warning.
