New to DUMBO after years in Manhattan, dog owners Connie Liu and Yuning Chiu encountered a vibrant community of passionate, design-oriented pet owners at Brooklyn’s Hillside dog park, and noted that the dog run denizen’s aesthetic didn’t quite jibe with the cluttered, musty vibe of traditional pet stores in the area. With these new neighbors in mind, the pair opened Rowf in late 2004, and the bright, modern corner space quickly became a hub for the stylish local pet set. Stocking food, toys, and accessories for dogs and cats, Rowf prides itself on supporting small, organic producers of treats and snacks, like the Doghouse Kitchen, whose cookies have a cult following. The store also sells cute accessories from local artists. As for urban necessities, Liu and Chiu swear by their own line of biodegradable poop bags, a must for walks with their dogs Scooby and Boo, who can often be found napping behind the counter.
