The smell of incense hangs heavy and sweet in this small Indian clothing store, where ethnic peasant skirts and flowing cotton tops are on offer, blissfully free of the East Village head-shop vibe. In fact, the high-quality saris and hand-embroidered tunics and skirts on hand are better suited to starlets and funky socialites than hippies; shawls and a limited selection of bangles and beaded shoes help complete the boho-chic look. Some customers bypass the garments just for the luminous textiles, using the vibrant fabrics to bring a little Southeast Asian spice to a dreary apartment; others find a scarf or shawl to perk up a monochrome, urban wardrobe: The bolts of brightly colored silks and chiffons that line the wall behind the counter are enough to inspire any shopper to shun his or her winter black for brilliantly silken, bird-of-paradise plumage.
