Profile
To understand how a slab of smoked salmon lying across a bagel became the symbol for an entire city, you have to come to Russ & Daughters. This immaculate boutique has served lox, herring and caviar from the same landmark Lower East Side location since 1914. The fish, salads and shmears are lovingly arranged and meticulously labeled inside the old-fashioned glass cases, with an expert staff happy to act as docents in this museum of Eastern European Jewish cuisine. Across the aisle, handmade chocolates, dried fruit and many varieties of halvah—including a sumptuous pistachio—tower invitingly, a reminder not to fill up only on the salty stuff. Although the rich and famous clamor for the caviar, all New Yorkers can renew their faith in the city with one of the hand-rolled bagels topped with whipped cream cheese and a pile of Wild Western Nova, a lean, lightly salted wild salmon cured with wood smoke. — Keach Hagey

While visiting NJ from Maryland over the weekend, we took a detour and drove into Manhattan in order to purchase a few items from Russ & Daughters as it was about to close. My wife ran in quickly from our car, followed by my cousin and her husband. Upon entering, she was offered to be served. At that moment, another employee appeared and requested that my wife, my cousin and her husband leave the store immediately since it was past closing hours. When he was not pleased with their pace, he demanded that they move faster.
This place has the best dried fruit I've ever had. There is a huge selection and the fruits are not the dry, hard things you buy in a bag at the grocery store. My favorite are the peaches. I've never even had the smoked salmon, but I go almost weekly for the fruit. They also make fantastic gift baskets.
