Profile
Father-son clothing got a lot of attention with the August launch of the line (and Nolita boutique) Alex Mill. Shortly after, to considerably less fanfare, longtime designer of girls’ frocks Kirsten Mogensen opened a similar concept shop, offering comfy dresses (above-the-knee shifts for Mommy, romp-ready mid-shin dresses for the little ones) that are cut and sewn in the garment district. For the young’uns (ages 18 months to 9 years), Mogensen starts with vintage-inspired shapes—Victorian-style box pleats, smock dresses worthy of Laura Ingalls Wilder—and chooses playful patterns that mix Liberty of London paisley with stripes and solids. There are collared shirts and peasant blouses, too, and Mogensen has been known to sew her super-elastic girls headbands, out of Liberty scraps, in the back of the shop, and, recently, men’s shirts cut from the same classic florals. Her practical sensibility—the finely woven cottons she favors air-dry wrinkle-free after a wash in cold water—attracts Tribeca moms, patrons of the 4th Street Food Co-op next door, and plenty who fall in between.
