Saint Laurent’s Soho store is a 4,000-square-foot gallerylike space in the neighborhood’s Cast Iron Historic District—the first New York location designed by creative director Hedi Slimane since his arrival in 2012. The venue maintains the building’s original tin ceiling and white concrete columns and its gleaming modern Art Deco elegance with sleek 360-degree mirrored fitting rooms and vintage French modernist furniture by the likes of Jean Prouvé and Marcel Breuer. Walk past the entryway’s floor-to-ceiling video installation of recent runway looks toward a massive rack along the right wall; it’s one fluid stretch of all of the women’s and men’s clothing in the store. Here you’ll find the latest runway pieces, like a $2,990 kimono-print red mini-dress with a paneled polyester bodice or a $470 cherry-print cotton T-shirt, with staples like the L01 black leather biker jacket ($5,290) and leather leggings ($2,990). Immense white marble shelves line the left wall, spotlighting a colorful array of patent-leather pumps and flats, high-top leather sneakers, stiletto sandals, and handbags like the beloved Sac De Jour in vibrant hues and varying sizes (starting at $1,990). Neighboring glass vitrines with transparent drawers showcase small leather goods, including wallets embossed with the classic YSL logo, plus studded cuffs, silver bangles, patterned silk scarves, and large-framed sunglasses. Saint Laurent’s second location is a temporary midtown space on 57th Street, located just across Fifth Avenue from the brand’s original New York City outpost, which is under construction and will reopen at the end of 2015.
