Profile
Piled up boxes addressed to worldwide destinations (as well as local institutions like Zabar's and Food Emporium) prove that fans will go to great lengths to savor the kosher breads and desserts from this 1943—founded Borough Park bakery. In addition to Sabbath challah and warm black and white cookies—a favorite among the shop's Hassidic clientele—the shop offers such delicacies as krakovsky, a cashew brittle, and praline nut rolls, covered with an apricot topping and mixed with blanched almonds. Owner Chaim Braunfeld oversees a brisk turnaround of strawberry rolls, honey loaves, and coconut macaroons during Passover, but also does a bang-up job with some of the perennials, such as the giant seven-layer coffee cake, which is rolled with chocolate and cream into a log-shaped dessert. And though these sweets might not help take off the weight, Schick's diet line offers sugar- and salt-free cookies and cakes.
