When Hermian Charles left the health-care industry after fifteen years to open Serene Rose, it was less a departure than a return: She grew up sewing in her family’s tailor shop and never fully quit the needle and thread. Brides-to-be travel to her honey-hued Park Slope boutique for handmade and off-the-rack bridal gowns. The designs eschew flounce and poof for tightly tailored bodices, trim silhouettes, and sculpted, scalloped necklines. The midrange gowns come in cream-colored raw silk or ivory satin and have short trains that pin up for post-ceremony celebrations. Bridesmaid dresses include styles by Beverly Siri and classic empire-waist looks by Lynn Lugo, while a lengthy rack of tight, jewel-toned gowns entice prom- and bat mitzvah-goers. Contemporary separates fill the rest of the orderly, airy shop. Slate-gray cowl-neck sweaters, button-up jackets with Peter Pan collars, and cashmere wraps give way in warmer months to geometric-print sundresses, floral camisoles, and pastel skirts. Beaded clutches and leather handbags line the shop’s perimeter, while hosiery, strapless bras, and jewelry by local designers provide the must-have add-ons to a special outfit.
