A visit to J. Morgan Puett's high-end, utilitarian women's boutique offers shoppers a museum-like retail experience as they peruse the designer's handmade pieces. Crafted in nature-derived hues like olive, charcoal, brown and taupe, the determinedly anti-trend shapes belie the luxurious materials like silk jacquard, pungey silk, and cotton velvet that Puett uses to build her garments. The neutral-toned shop—which also carries designs by Gary Graham and Brett Cooper and assorted low-glitz accessories—is accented with installation-inspired art, plus various implements and artifacts native to New York. Puett's rustic-chic clothing is manufactured—cut, sewn, and dyed—on-site. Look for the cotton velvet tailcoat and the shapely, timeless seamed jacket in washed wool; loyal shoppers swear by the billowy tunics, ankle-length shirred skirts and organic-fiber jumpers in linen and silk that feel like air on the skin. For a price, the designer also creates made-to-order items.
